Have you ever felt overwhelmed or confused by the terms your stylist uses during your appointment? Maybe you’ve accidentally booked the wrong service online because you weren’t sure of the difference between “color” and “highlights.” And seriously, what is a root melt?!

Don’t worry—you’re not alone, and I’m here to help! In this post, I’ll break down some of the most commonly used hair terms to help you better understand what you’re asking for. Whether it’s navigating the right terminology or selecting the perfect service for your hair goals, I’ve got you covered.

Below, I’ve outlined the services I offer, along with approximate timing. Keep in mind that timing can vary depending on your stylist, as well as your hair’s type, texture, length, and density. Let’s dive in!

Color:

Root Touch-Up vs. All-Over Color Est. total time 1-2 hrs

Root touch-up: A root touch-up specifically addresses only the new outgrowth of the natural hair color. It’s intended to maintain color consistency between the roots and the previously colored or highlighted sections while leaving the rest of the hair relatively untouched.

All-over color: An all-over color, as the name suggests, is applied to the entire head of hair, coating every strand completely. It is used to change the overall hair color or refresh the existing color throughout. The application is more inclusive and can involve a single shade or a combination of shades, depending on the desired result.

In summary, a root touch-up is targeted at addressing new growth only. On the other hand, an all-over color is more comprehensive by changing or refreshing the color and applying it throughout the entire head of hair. The choice between the two depend on the preferences, maintenance goals, and the desired outcome.

Partial Highlight: Est. total time 2.5-3 hrs

A “partial highlight” refers to the amount of hair that’s highlighted because only a “partial” amount is done instead of the entire (full) head. Common areas include the crown, front sections around the face, or the top layer of hair. This allows a more subtle and natural effect, as it adds dimension and brightness yet maintains a lower level of maintenance than a full. This is chosen based on preference or what’s needed to achieve the desired outcome. Additionally, a partial can provide more versatility for those wanting to experiment with highlights without drastic change.

Full Highlight: Est. total time 3-3.5 hrs.

A “full highlight” requires applying highlights throughout the entire head of hair adding brightness, dimension, and contrast. Full highlights are chosen when someone wants a more dramatic change or seeks a lighter, overall appearance throughout the entire head. This is especially helpful when the client doesn’t want to see as much variation in hair, especially when it’s pulled up. This method is extremely versatile from natural-looking, sun-kissed highlights to bold and vibrant. It’s important to note that full highlights typically require more maintenance because the outgrowth is more noticeable.

Highlight With a Root-melt: Est. total time 2.5-3.5 hrs.

A “highlight with a root melt” is a specific technique that combines highlights with a root melting process. This method is intended to create a seamless, natural transition between the highlighted sections and the natural color at the roots. The results are soft and blended, reducing the contrast between the highlighted and non-highlighted areas. It’s a new spin on the “balayage” and “ombre” because it’s faster, more even, and longer lasting and there is no back-combing necessary. This technique is fully customizable, allowing for a broad range of looks, depending on the client’s preferences and the stylist’s expertise.

Highlight with Color: Est. total time 2.5-3.5 hrs.

A “highlight with color” service is a comprehensive process that involves both adding lighter strands to specific sections of your hair (highlighting) and changing the overall color of your hair (coloring). This combination allows for a customized and multi-dimensional look as a result. It also provides a more comprehensive transformation, allowing you to achieve a unique and customized style.

Mini Highlight or Money Piece:

A “money piece” is when a small section of hair, usually targeted around the face or along the hairline, is highlighted to draw more attention to that specific area. This is often used to add brightness and dimension, enhancing the overall hairstyle, in half the time, and half the cost. The term “money piece” doesn’t refer to the look or the technique, but instead, because of the price and effort required to achieve it. The face-framing pieces are ideal to make it look so fresh, almost as if you’ve had all your hair re-done. There’s a variety of ways this service can be applied such as natural and subtle, to bold and vibrant. A “mini highlight” is very similar in the sense that the target area is also around the face, but a few extra foils can be applied to create a more uniform look. This is also referred to as “highlight mapping” where the stylist chooses the areas that are the most noticeable, or in more need of attention. This allows more longevity between traditional highlighting services, making it a great option for those seeking a little more than what a money piece could offer.

Bleach Touch-up: Est. time 1.5-2.5 hrs.

A bleach touch-up is the process of applying bleach directly onto the scalp, at the outgrown area of previously lightened hair. This is commonly used to address the natural growth that occurs after an initial full-bleaching or highlighting session. The purpose of a bleach touch-up is to maintain consistent color and prevent a noticeable contrast between the bleached sections and the natural hair at the roots. This application can be used for bold, creative colors, or a more uniform blonde from roots to ends. It’s important to understand that when applying bleach this way, it can be harsh on the scalp as well as the hair, so it’s crucial to follow proper aftercare and maintenance to keep the hair healthy and minimize damage. A full consultation is required before booking this service.

Base Breaker: Est. time 15-30 min

A base breaker is the method used to soften or lighten the natural color of the hair typically at the root or “base” though it can be applied all over if needed. It’s a milder form of color that creates a subtle, gradual transition between the natural color and any highlighted or lighter sections in the hair. Base breakers are often chosen when a client wants to refresh their color without making a drastic change. It’s particularly useful for those seeking a more seamless and natural blend, in half the time.

Toner: Est. time 5-25 min

A toner is usually a demi or semi-permanent that’s used when the color has become uneven, or over highlights to give it tonal value. Its primary purpose is to neutralize or adjust unwanted tones in the hair, add shine, or to achieve the desired final color.

Neutralization: Toners can help neutralize or counteract unwanted tones in the hair.

Adjusting Color: Toners can also be used to adjust the overall color of the hair, giving it a more even and polished appearance. They provide an opportunity to customize the final shade, whether it’s a cooler blonde, a warmer brunette, or any other desired color tone.

Scalp Treatment: Est time 30-60 min.

Scalp treatments are aimed at promoting a healthy scalp because this is the foundation for healthy hair growth, it can address issues such as dryness, oiliness, flakiness, or irritation and is essential in maintaining overall hair health. Here are some benefits:

Improved Scalp Health: Scalp treatments are designed to address specific scalp concerns, promoting the overall health of the hair as well as providing a more balanced scalp environment.

Enhanced Hair Growth: A healthy scalp is essential for optimal hair growth because it is the foundation. The massage that’s included in the process can stimulate blood flow to the scalp, which may promote hair growth in certain situations.

It’s important to note that scalp treatments are completely customizable, and the choice of products and techniques depends on the client’s needs and desired target issue. An in-depth consultation can help determine the most suitable course of action.

Teen Scalp Detox: Est. total time 30-60 min.

Proper hair cleansing for teens is essential for several reasons by helping contribute to overall hair health, hygiene, and self-esteem. Here are some examples:

Buildup: Teens often experience an increase in oil production due to hormonal changes. Proper cleansing helps remove excess oil and prevent the buildup of dirt and styling products on the scalp and hair, promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.

Acne: Excess oil and product buildup on the scalp can contribute to acne along the hairline and forehead. Regular hair cleansing helps minimize the risk of acne breakouts in these areas.

Health: A clean scalp is crucial for maintaining overall scalp health. Proper cleansing removes impurities, dead skin cells, and bacteria, reducing the risk of issues such as dandruff and itchiness.

Odor Control: Teenagers who participate in various activities like sports and other physical activities, can produce sweat and potentially produce “unwanted scents”. Regular cleaning can help control and eliminate this while contributing to better hygiene and overall confidence.

Confidence: Clean and well-groomed hair often contributes to an individual’s overall appearance and self-esteem. Teenagers, who may be particularly conscious of their appearance during this phase of life, can benefit emotionally and psychologically from maintaining clean and healthy hair.

Habits: Teaching teens proper hair care such as regular cleansing could instill good habits that will last a lifetime. Establishing a routine early on promotes a lifelong commitment to maintaining healthier hair.

Prevention: Proper scalp care helps prevent common issues like oily, dry, or irritated scalp. Addressing this early on will help contribute to long-term hair health.

American Wave: Est. total time 2.5-3 hrs.

The American Wave is designed to add texture, movement, and body to the hair, offering a more casual and lived-in look. It’s popular for those who desire loose waves or curls with little or no need for daily styling. This is not intended to create tight or uniform curls but a rather tousled and lived-in look or help add volume and texture to fine, limp hair. There is a smoothing property added to the solution to aid with frizz and styling while including chlorophyll from plants to counteract the smell of sulfur. Uses for an American Wave are broad and customizable, but a thorough consultation is necessary before scheduling one to make sure it’s right for you.

Botox for Hair: Est. total time 1.5-2.5 hrs.

Despite the name, this does not contain botulinum toxin, but rather a blend of conditioning and revitalizing ingredients such as naturally derived vitamins, proteins, and oils. Hair Botox is intended to improve the overall condition of the hair by providing hydration, reversing the signs of aging in hair, reducing frizz, and restoring shine. It’s often chosen by individuals with dry, damaged, or frizzy hair that need a little “hair pick me up”. This differs from Keratin because it does not provide a straightening component to it. It also has zero formaldehyde, making it a great option for those seeking that added benefit. Brand used: Kerazon Hair Btx. The effectiveness of the treatment may vary based on hair types and conditions.

Keratin Treatment: Est. time 2.5-3 hrs.

A keratin treatment is a popular hair-smoothing and straightening procedure designed to reduce frizz, enhance shine, and create more manageable hair, by adding extra Keratin into the cuticle itself. Keratins contain a specially formulated solution that is applied to the hair and then sealed in with heat. Benefits include:

Frizz Reduction: Keratin treatments are highly effective in reducing frizz and taming unruly hair.

Smoothing Effect: The treatment imparts a smoothing effect, making the hair more manageable and easier to style with less effort. Shine Enhancement: Keratin treatments can enhance the natural shine and luster of the hair.

Temporary Straightening: While not a permanent straightening solution, keratin treatments can relax curls and waves, providing a straighter appearance that lasts from a couple weeks to a couple of months, depending on which type is chosen.

Longevity and overall results can vary based on brand, hair type, and post-treatment maintenance. Brands used by me are Brazilian Blow-out, Coppola Keratin and Keratin Express, and Magic-Sleek (formaldehyde free)

Texturizing:

“Texturizing” hair means using special cutting techniques to remove some weight (when the hair feels or look too bulky), add movement, and create more dimension. This process usually involves thinning or softening certain areas, so the hair looks more layered, voluminous, and easier to style, without changing the length. It can be done with scissors, razors, or thinning shears (those weird looking scissors that have the teeth on them) to achieve different effects based on the client’s hair type and desired look. Even if a client wants their hair to have the look of being “one length”, it’s always best to use some texturizing in the process to help the growth process in between cuts.

Bridging the Gap Between Expectations and Results:

I hope this breakdown of terms and services has been helpful. I understand how confusing some of the terminology can be—it often feels like we’re speaking a completely different language! To make matters more confusing, the word color is used interchangeably in so many ways.

That’s why I wanted to take the time to create visuals to compliment these explanations. I believe visuals, paired with clear definitions, can help anchor the concepts more effectively.

I like to encourage my clients to bring an inspirational picture to their appointment. This can bridge the gap between what’s imagined and what’s possible. Even when it feels like there’s a mutual understanding, having a visual reference ensures everyone is on the same page.

A thorough consultation with your stylist is crucial, but it’s equally important for the client to feel empowered to ask questions. If you request a specific service and the stylist responds with a simple “OK, no problem,” it might be worth diving deeper into what that means. Clear communication sets the foundation for achieving results that meet—or exceed—your expectations.

In Conclusion….

By understanding the terminology, bringing in inspirational photos, and asking the right questions, you can ensure that your stylist fully understands your goals—and you leave the salon with a result you love. I encourage all of my clients to take the time for a thorough consultation and to feel empowered to ask as many questions as needed to feel comfortable with what were doing. Remember, the more informed and involved you are in the process, the better the outcome will be. Your hair journey is a partnership, and together we’ll make sure it’s a perfect one.
